Where you live in the UK changes your budget, your commute and your daily life. These guides compare eight cities from our fee estimator using official pages: visa money, university accommodation, student travel and community life. Each city has its own guide with sources.

Prices come from each university or transport page and cover different years and room types, so treat them as a guide and not a quote. Edinburgh’s 2026/27 room prices were not available to us, so we show the university’s average monthly living cost instead.
What the visa asks you to show
GOV.UK sets monthly money for the student visa at £1,529 in London and £1,171 outside London, for up to nine months. Scotland and the north of England count as outside London. That gap is £358 a month, so a London course needs more funds in your account before you apply.
Visa money is a minimum, not a budget. Your tuition, rent, transport and food come on top of what the officer expects you to hold, and the officer also looks at your study plans. Read our UK student visa guide for the full funds rule.
How to choose between cities
- Budget: compare weekly housing prices and the length of the contract, because 39-week and 51-week contracts differ.
- Travel: check what student fares cover and whether you need a pass from your first week.
- Community and faith: look for prayer rooms on your campus and the cultural events each city holds.
- Course and university: a degree matters more than the postcode, so shortlist courses first.
We could not find a single official source that ranks UK cities for international students, so we do not rank them. We also did not find a current Pakistani population share for every city, so the guides give it only where an official page states it.

How the visa money and housing prices fit together
Take a nine-month course in Sheffield. The visa rule asks for £1,171 a month, which is £10,539, our calculation, while Sheffield Hallam halls cost £96 to £185 a week. In London the same period needs £13,761, and UCL halls cost £153.86 to £529.06 a week. The visa figure is a proof-of-funds rule, so it does not replace your own budget.
A cheaper city can still be the right choice only if the course, the university’s standing and your goals fit. Ask each university for its current fees and any limits on applications from Pakistan before you decide.
