About Edinburgh

Edinburgh had 514,512 residents in Scotland’s Census 2022, up 7.9% since 2011. The City of Edinburgh Council reports that 8.6% of residents are Asian and that Muslim numbers rose slightly since 2011, with no count given. We did not find a current Pakistani share, so we do not quote one.

Scotland counts as outside London for visa money. You must show £1,171 a month for up to nine months, or £10,539, plus tuition. See the UK student visa guide.

Getting around

A Lothian Student Ridacard costs £23 for one week, £68 for four weeks, £660 for a year paid upfront or £58 a month by Direct Debit. A nine-month ticket costs £570 and can be bought only from 24 August to 31 October. It covers Lothian Buses, Edinburgh Trams, NightBus and the Airlink 100, and your University of Edinburgh matriculation card makes you eligible. Scottish residents under 22 travel free with a National Entitlement Card or Young Scot card.

Festivals and city life

The University of Edinburgh lists the Science Festival in April, Jazz and Blues in July, and in August the Art Festival, Royal Military Tattoo, International Festival, Fringe, Film Festival and Book Festival. The Scottish International Storytelling Festival runs in October, and Edinburgh’s Hogmanay in December is described as one of the largest street parties in the world.

Invest in Edinburgh names software and technology, financial services, tourism, higher education, film and television, and food and drink as key sectors. It gives no employment figures.

How we help

We help you choose a course and university, check your funds against the visa rule and prepare your application. Use our UK cost estimator to compare tuition in Edinburgh with other cities, then book a free initial consultation. We cannot promise a visa.

A budget check before you apply

The university’s estimate of £1,546 a month is above the £1,171 a month the visa asks you to show. The visa figure is a minimum for proof of funds, and the university’s figure is its estimate of what a student spends. Plan for the higher figure.

The bus pass can change the sums. A Ridacard costs £58 a month by Direct Debit, while the university’s estimate includes a local bus allowance of £58 a month and says buses are free if you are under 22 and eligible. Ask the university what applies to you, and check tuition in our UK cost estimator.

Your first month in Edinburgh

  1. Buy a Ridacard once you have your matriculation card.
  2. Decide between the annual ticket and the monthly Direct Debit.
  3. Check your lease length, because the university’s figures use 39 weeks.
  4. Book August festival visits early if you arrive in summer.

Our settling-in guide explains your eVisa, bank account and GP registration.
