Study in Bradford from Pakistan: Community, Costs and Travel

Bradford has one of the largest Pakistani communities in England and a university in the city centre. This guide covers the community figures, visa money, bus tickets, the multi-faith space, culture and the local economy, using official pages.

About Bradford

Bradford’s population was estimated at 557,800 in mid-2025. At the 2021 Census 25.5% of the district was Pakistani, the second-highest share in England, and 30.5% was Muslim. The University of Bradford sits in the city centre.

West Yorkshire counts as outside London. You must show £1,171 a month for up to nine months, or £10,539, plus tuition. Our UK student visa guide explains the rule.

Housing

The University of Bradford’s accommodation page gives no price of its own. It cites a StudentCrowd 2026 city average of £100 a week and points to Homes for Students (The Green) for room prices. A third-party average is not an official figure, so ask the university for hall prices and read our settling-in guide for deposit and contract rules.

Bus tickets: MCard

West Yorkshire MCard (bus-only, 19 to 25)Price
Weekly£19.20
Monthly£74.40

The West Yorkshire Combined Authority says 19 to 25-year-olds and full-time students over 25 can buy bus-only MCard termly, academic-year or calendar-year tickets. In its announcement of 1 September 2026 it says a first-term ticket saves over £50 compared with weekly tickets.

Faith, culture and events

The University of Bradford has a Multi-Faith Space in Student Central, room 0.49. The chaplaincy can arrange a Muslim faith advisor and help you find mosques, but the page lists no dedicated prayer rooms.

Bradford is a UNESCO City of Film and was UK City of Culture in 2025. VisitBritain’s 2025 programme included the Turner Prize at Cartwright Hall from September 2025. That programme belongs to 2025, so check what is on during your studies.

Work and sectors

Bradford Council names advanced engineering, chemicals, automotive components, food manufacture, financial services and digital as sectors. Manufacturing was about 12% of employment, 24,000 jobs, in figures that run to 2019, so they are dated. Employers named include Morrisons, Yorkshire Water and Yorkshire Building Society.

What we could not confirm

  • A University of Bradford hall price.
  • Any statement by the university on recruitment from Pakistan; its international page has none.
  • Current employment figures.

How we help

We help you choose a course and university, check your funds against the visa rule and prepare your application. Use our UK cost estimator to compare tuition in Bradford with other cities, then book a free initial consultation. We cannot promise a visa.

Questions to ask before you choose Bradford

  • What are the hall prices for my intake, since the university page lists none?
  • Can the chaplaincy connect me with a Muslim faith advisor before I arrive?
  • Does my age qualify me for the 19 to 25 MCard?
  • What are the tuition fees for my course?

Bradford’s community and prices are a strong draw, but the university’s own housing figures matter more than a city average. Compare it with Sheffield and Manchester in our UK city guides.

Your first month in Bradford

  1. Ask the chaplaincy about a Muslim faith advisor.
  2. Compare the MCard weekly and termly prices before you buy.
  3. Open a bank account once you have your enrolment letter.
  4. Look at the open-air film screenings and the Bradford Movie Trail.

Work rules and council tax are in our settling-in guide.

How to use the census figures

The census shares describe the whole district, not the streets around the university, so use them as background and not as a promise of what any neighbourhood is like. Visit or video-call the university before you commit, and ask the students’ union about off-campus housing.
