About Glasgow

Glasgow had a population of 620,700 in Scotland’s Census 2022, up 4.6% from 2011. In 2021/22 its five higher education institutions had 92,420 students, of whom 27,510 were from overseas. China, India, the USA and Nigeria were the largest overseas groups, and Pakistan was not listed. Pakistani is the largest non-white ethnic group in the city at 5%, according to a chart labelled 2022.

Scotland counts as outside London for visa money, so you must show £1,171 a month for up to nine months, or £10,539. See the UK student visa guide.

Travel in Glasgow

Glasgow Caledonian University says under-22s in Scotland ride buses free, that single bus fares in the Strathclyde area are capped at £2, and that a Subway Smartcard gives up to 30% off. SPT lists a Subway single at £1.80, an all-day ticket at £3.40, a 7-day ticket at £15.50 and a 28-day ticket at £60, with no student fare on that page. A 16-25 Railcard gives 30% off off-peak rail.

Faith, food and events

The University of Glasgow has prayer and reflection spaces with wudu facilities: the Chaplaincy room in the Main Building (Monday to Friday, 9 to 5), the Library Annexe, the James McCune Smith Learning Hub, the Clarice Pears Building, the Adam Smith Business School and the QEUH Sanctuary. Friday Jumuah prayers are held at Woodlands Hall, 77 Southpark Avenue, G12 8LE. The university page lists no mosques.

The Glasgow Mela on 22 June 2025 in Kelvingrove Park was free and drew more than 21,000 people. Glasgow Life calls it Scotland’s biggest South Asian festival of music, dance and arts. We did not confirm the date of the next Mela.

Work and sectors

The city’s Investment Strategy, approved on 28 September 2023, names financial and business services, life sciences and precision medicine, creative and digital, green economy, and space and satellite as key sectors. That shows where the city is investing, not that jobs are open to students.

What we could not confirm

  • Prices for Glasgow Caledonian and Strathclyde housing.
  • A named list of local mosques.
