London is the most expensive UK city for visa funds, but it has the largest range of universities and communities. This guide gives the visa money rule, UCL accommodation prices, student travel discounts and city facts from official pages.
About London
London had 8.80 million residents at the 2021 Census. The Greater London Authority’s census release counts 1.32 million Muslims, 15% of Londoners, and 1.82 million people in Asian groups, 21%. We did not find a Pakistani share on that release, so we do not quote one.
Our fee estimator includes several London universities, and this guide shows prices only for UCL because that is the page we could read in full. Check each university you apply to.
Visa money for a London course
GOV.UK asks London students to show £1,529 a month for up to nine months. Outside London the figure is £1,171. For a nine-month period that is £13,761 in London, our calculation. Tuition fees are separate. Read the UK student visa guide for the full funds rule and how long the money must be held.
Accommodation: UCL halls 2026/27
| Student type | Weekly price range | Contract |
|---|---|---|

| Undergraduate (twin to catered ensuite) | £163.94 to £455.71 | 39 or 40 weeks |
| Undergraduate single room | About £217 to £312 | 39 or 40 weeks |

UCL’s two fee pages differ slightly on the top postgraduate price (£529.06 and £515.06), so confirm on the live page. UCL undergraduate contracts start on 26 September 2026. We did not find official prices for other London universities, so ask them directly. Private rents in London are not covered by an official figure we could cite.
Getting around London
The 18+ Student Oyster photocard gives 30% off adult Travelcards and Bus & Tram Pass season tickets. It costs £20 to apply. You must be 18 or over, live in a London borough during term and be enrolled on a qualifying course at a TfL-registered institution, such as a full-time course of 15 or more hours a week or a full-time postgraduate course.
A 16-25 Railcard adds a third off pay-as-you-go off-peak fares.
Community, faith and events
Eid in the Square is a free event in Trafalgar Square with music, food stalls and a Pakistani-British food pop-up, according to the Mayor of London’s office. That release dates from 2022, so we could not confirm this year’s programme. We also did not find a named list of mosques on official or university pages, so ask your university’s chaplaincy or students’ union.
We did not find a current official page on London’s employment sectors, so we say nothing about jobs here. Your work rights are in the settling-in guide.
What we could not confirm
- The Pakistani share of London’s population.
- Accommodation prices at universities other than UCL.
- A current official list of London employer sectors.
We prefer to say so than to guess. We confirm these points with you at your consultation.

Questions to ask before you choose a London university
- Is my course on the full-time list that qualifies for a Student Oyster card?
- Which contract length applies to my hall, 39, 40 or 51 weeks?
- Does the university offer halls to international students who apply late?
- What does tuition cost, and when is it due?
Our UK cost estimator shows tuition for the universities it covers, so you can set it beside the housing prices above.
