Middlesbrough has the lowest weekly university housing prices we found, a university with prayer rooms and a free modern art gallery. This guide covers visa money, Teesside halls, the under-21 bus fare, faith facilities and Tees Valley sectors from official pages.
About Middlesbrough
Middlesbrough had 143,900 residents at the 2021 Census, up 4.0% from about 138,400 in 2011. Teesside University has campuses in Middlesbrough and Darlington. The council shows 10.49% of residents as Asian or Asian British but gives no Pakistani figure, and we found no Muslim share, so we quote none.
The Tees Valley counts as outside London. You must show £1,171 a month for up to nine months, or £10,539, plus tuition. See the UK student visa guide.

Bus fares
Tees Valley U21 tickets, for ages 5 to 21, cost up to £1 for a single and up to £3 for a day, from 16 June 2024, and you need ID if you are 16 or over. The Tees Valley Combined Authority said in 2024 that the scheme was funded to June 2025, and the Stagecoach page shows no end date, so check it is still running. We did not find adult or 22-plus student fares.
Faith and culture
Teesside University has Muslim prayer rooms for men and women with wudhu facilities on the ground floor of Education House, a multi-faith prayer space at Bios, and a Library Wellbeing Room at set times. Darlington has the Atmos multi-faith room. Opening times are 8 am to 9 pm on weekdays and 10 am to 3 pm at weekends.
mima, the Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art, is in Centre Square and has free admission, according to the Art Fund.
Work and sectors
The Tees Valley Combined Authority, on a page modified on 28 May 2026, lists advanced manufacturing and engineering, automotive and aerospace, chemical and process, digital, energy and low carbon, healthcare and life sciences, offshore, professional business services and creative as key sectors.
What we could not confirm
- The Pakistani and Muslim share of Middlesbrough.
- Whether the under-21 bus cap still runs.
