Why study in Manchester
Manchester had 551,938 residents at the 2021 Census. Manchester City Council counts 122,962 Muslim residents, about 22% by our calculation, and 51.3% of residents are from ethnic minority groups. Across Greater Manchester the Pakistani population grew by 79,049, or 60.8%, between 2011 and 2021, the largest numeric rise of any group, and 89,331 residents were born in Pakistan.
We did not find the Pakistani share for the city itself on the council page, so we do not quote one.
Visa money for a Manchester course
Manchester counts as outside London, so GOV.UK asks you to show £1,171 a month for up to nine months, which is £10,539, our calculation. Tuition is extra. See the UK student visa guide for how the money must be held.
Manchester student accommodation: University of Manchester housing
At the University of Manchester, Weston Hall en suite rooms cost from £198 a week for 2026/27, or £8,300 for a 42-week contract, with 508 en suite rooms. We did not open price pages for Manchester Metropolitan University or Salford, so we show no figure for them.
Private rents are not covered by an official figure we could cite. Use the settling-in guide for deposit and tenancy rules.
Manchester student transport: bus and tram tickets
| Ticket | Price |

| Adult day pass | £5 |
| Bee Bus 7-day / 28-day (adult) | £20 / £80 |
| Bee AnyBus 7-day / 28-day (students up to 26) | £18.60 / £63.30 |

Community, faith and events
The University of Manchester has two prayer rooms for Muslim students on campus, and several mosques near the university and student areas, though it names none. The Muslim chaplain’s office is in McDougall’s Prayer Hall. The university says halal, vegetarian and kosher food is affordable and widely available, and that nearly 200 languages are spoken in the city.
The Curry Mile in Rusholme lies between the main and Fallowfield campuses. Manchester Mega Mela is described as the largest south-east Asian cultural celebration in the north of England, and the university says the city celebrates Eid with notable energy.
Universities in Manchester
The University of Manchester says it is home to more than 10,000 international students (manchester.ac.uk). Manchester Metropolitan University says its students come from more than 100 countries, and its courses include Accounting and Finance and Biomedical Science (mmu.ac.uk). The University of Salford says about 4,000 international students currently study on its campuses, and it offers an International Foundation Year (salford.ac.uk). Each university publishes its own entry requirements for students from Pakistan.
Arrival checks and student support
Manchester Metropolitan University runs a right to study check when you arrive in the UK, and you must complete it before you can enrol online (mmu.ac.uk). The University of Manchester offers "Get Ready Live", a video show for new students, with online sessions for international students (welcome.manchester.ac.uk).
Register with an NHS GP
A GP surgery in England registers anyone for free, and the NHS asks for no ID, proof of address or immigration papers. A surgery may say no if it has no space or you live outside its area. In that case it must write to you within 14 days with its reasons (nhs.uk).
Council tax for full-time students
A home shared only by full-time students pays no Council Tax. If a bill still arrives, apply for an exemption. GOV.UK defines a standard course as one lasting at least a year, with 21 or more hours of study a week (gov.uk). Students must still apply, even when they are disregarded (gov.uk).
Airport and rail links
Manchester Airport station lies between Terminal 2 and Terminal 3. Trains to Manchester Piccadilly take around 20 minutes and run every 10 minutes, seven days a week (manchesterairport.co.uk). TfGM says the Airport tram line runs Monday to Thursday from 6am to midnight (tfgm.com).
Libraries and parks
Manchester City Council lists a Central Library and a directory of local branches (manchester.gov.uk). The council runs parks including Heaton Park, Wythenshawe Park and Chorlton Water Park. Heaton Park is open from 8am to dusk every day (manchester.gov.uk).
