To study in Switzerland from Pakistan you apply in person for a national D visa at the Swiss Embassy in Islamabad, and the visa is issued only after the cantonal migration authority approves. Expect about 8 to 12 weeks. This guide covers the steps, costs and work rules.
Switzerland student visa process from Pakistan
- Get admitted by a Swiss institution, and apply before its deadline.
- Book an appointment by emailing islamabad.visa@eda.admin.ch with a PDF of your passport and the Swiss authorisation letter if you have one.
- Apply in person at the Embassy of Switzerland in Islamabad. Appointments only. VFS handles short stays, and applications for over 90 days go to the Embassy.
- Wait for cantonal approval. The Embassy passes your file to the cantonal authority and issues the visa only after approval.
- After arrival, get a permit from the cantonal migration authority for stays over three months.
The Embassy gives no status updates, so contact the cantonal migration authority. The Embassy estimates 8 to 12 weeks, which can vary considerably by canton, and the Swiss migration office says one to several months. We could not find the D-visa fee for Pakistan. The migration office says a surcharge of up to 50% of the national visa fee may apply to urgent or complex cases.
The Embassy page points to a “Visa application for Students” PDF and the national visa form with an ICAO photo, but the PDF would not open, so we confirm the Pakistan checklist at your consultation. For reference only, the Swiss Embassy’s student checklist for India lists an admission letter, proof of tuition payment, an English certificate, a cover letter, a CV, a sponsor letter, proof of solvency and certificates.

ETH tripled its fee for new international students from autumn 2025, from CHF 730 to CHF 2,190 a semester. Moving from an ETH bachelor’s to a master’s counts as a new study, existing students keep the old fee, and fees are reviewed every four years. Another ETH page still shows an older figure, so we confirm the fee before you apply. We could not verify the health-insurance rule, so we confirm it at your consultation.
Working in Switzerland as a student
Students may work up to 15 hours a week outside holidays, only from six months after the course starts, and with cantonal approval. The university must confirm the job fits your studies, and your employer files the application. ETH allows up to full time in lecture-free periods, and a master’s student working inside an ETH department has no waiting period. EPFL also allows full time in vacations, with a six-month wait except for research student assistants. Internships need a permit and are allowed only if they are part of your studies.
Graduates of a Swiss higher education institution have six months from the end of the course to look for a job. A job after that is admitted only where it serves an overriding scientific or economic interest. EPFL describes this as a six-month permit that cannot be extended. We found no official page on dependants.
English requirements and entry with the HSSC
The University of Zurich asks English-taught master’s applicants for C1, which it lists as IELTS Academic 7 overall, with IELTS Online not accepted, or TOEFL iBT 100. ETH accepts TOEFL, IELTS, C1 Advanced and C2 Proficiency for its master’s programmes, with minimum scores set by each programme.
Bachelor’s programmes at ETH and Zurich are taught in German, and Zurich asks for German C1 for all bachelor’s programmes. ETH’s 2025/26 rules for Pakistan accept the Higher Secondary Certificate or Intermediate Certificate, plus a university admission certificate from a recognised Pakistani university, plus the ETH Reduced Entrance Examination. Otherwise you sit the Comprehensive Entrance Examination. Master’s entry needs a bachelor’s degree, and we could not confirm the Pakistani grade thresholds.
Dates, scholarships and how we help
ETH bachelor’s starts in autumn only. Applications run from 1 December to 31 March, and registration for the entrance exam runs from 15 September to 15 October, though the page does not state the year. German must be proven by 31 March. Zurich’s bachelor’s registration deadline is 15 June.
The Swiss Government Excellence Scholarships do not fund bachelor’s or master’s study. They are research fellowships for early-career researchers with a completed master’s, age 35 at most, paying CHF 2,450 a month, applied for through the Swiss representation. We could not confirm the Pakistan details for 2027-28.
