How the Swiss student visa works
- Get admission to a Swiss university or school.
- Apply for a national visa at the Swiss embassy or consulate before you travel – allow at least 8 weeks. Your canton’s migration office decides the application.
- Register with your cantonal authority within 14 days of arriving. Your permit lasts for your studies or one year, renewable.
What you need
- Admission confirmation and a study plan.
- Proof of enough money to cover your living costs for your studies.
- Health insurance including accident cover.
- Proof of accommodation.
- A motivation letter, CV and language details.
- A commitment to leave Switzerland after your studies.
Working while you study
After your first six months of study, you can work up to 15 hours a week in term and full-time in semester breaks. Your employer applies for permission first.
