The F-1 student visa, step by step
- Get accepted by an SEVP-certified school.
- Receive your Form I-20 from the school.
- Pay the SEVIS I-901 fee.
- Complete the online DS-160 form.
- Pay the visa application fee and book your interview.
- Attend your visa interview at the U.S. Embassy or Consulate.

- Tuition and living costs: vary by university – your I-20 shows the amount you must prove.
Timing
Your visa can be issued up to 365 days before your course starts, but you can enter the USA no more than 30 days before the start date.
Working while you study
On-campus work is usually allowed up to 20 hours a week while school is in session. Practical training after graduation (OPT) may be possible – the rules are under review, so we check the latest position with you.
