What you need for a Canadian study permit

• An acceptance letter from a Designated Learning Institution (DLI).
• A Provincial or Territorial Attestation Letter (PAL/TAL) – most students need one. From 1 January 2026, master’s and PhD students at public institutions are exempt.
• Proof of funds for tuition, living costs and travel.
• Biometrics (fingerprints and photo).
• The application is made online.

Costs to plan for

• Living costs you must show: CAD $23,448 for a single student outside Quebec (applications from 1 September 2026), plus your first year’s tuition and travel.
• Biometrics fee: CAD $85.
• Tuition fees: vary by institution and program.

Working while you study

You can usually work up to 24 hours a week off campus during term, and full-time during scheduled breaks.

After you graduate

Some graduates can apply for a Post-Graduation Work Permit. Eligibility depends on your program, so we check this before you choose a course.
