How the Dutch student permit works

• Your university or college applies for your residence permit – it must be a recognised sponsor.
• You then collect an MVV entry visa and travel to the Netherlands.
• You must show you have enough money to live on during your studies.

Costs to plan for

• Funds you must show: €1,130.77 a month for university / higher professional education (July–December 2026).
• Residence permit fee: €254 (2026).
• Tuition: set by each institution for non-EU students.

Working while you study

You can work up to 16 hours a week, or full-time in June, July and August – your employer needs a work permit (TWV) for you.

After you graduate

Graduates of Dutch universities can apply for a one-year orientation year permit to look for work, within 3 years of graduating, and can work freely during that year.
