A UK credibility interview checks that you are a genuine student who can explain your course, university, finances and plans in your own words. Universities often hold one before issuing your CAS, and the Home Office can interview you after you apply. Preparation makes the difference.
Pre-CAS interview vs Home Office interview
- Pre-CAS (university) interview: many universities interview Pakistani applicants online before issuing a CAS, to check your English and your reasons for studying.
- Home Office interview: after you apply, a visa officer may interview you by video. They can refuse your visa if they are not satisfied you are a genuine student.
Interviews have become stricter since September 2025, when the Home Office lowered the visa refusal rate universities must stay under to 5%. Universities now use pre-CAS interviews to check applicants carefully before they issue a CAS.

Credibility interview tips
- Know your course in detail: modules, length, start date and fees from your offer letter.
- Answer in your own words: memorised answers sound rehearsed and officers ask follow-up questions.
- Know your money: who pays, the source of funds and the amounts in your bank statement.
- Be consistent: your answers must match your application, personal statement and documents.
- Be honest: if you had a study gap or a previous refusal, explain it clearly.
- Check your set-up: quiet room, stable internet, documents to hand.
Common mistakes
- Not knowing the name of your modules or your course start date.
- Saying the main reason is to work in the UK.
- Not knowing who your sponsor is or how much is in the account.
- Answers copied from the internet.
- Weak spoken English – practise speaking every day before the interview.
Home Office interview questions: plan your answers
Write short notes for each question above using facts from your offer letter, CAS and bank documents, then practise saying them aloud – not reading them. Ask a friend or your consultant to interrupt with follow-up questions, as real interviewers do.

Example: planning an answer
Question: “Why have you chosen this course?”
A strong plan: name the course and two modules that match your experience; explain the gap in your skills it fills; say what job you are aiming for in Pakistan and why the course leads there. For example, a computer science graduate choosing an MSc in Data Science might mention the machine learning and data visualisation modules, two years of work as a junior developer, and a goal of moving into a data analyst role with a Karachi bank.
A weak answer: “Because the UK has good education and I want a better future.” It is true of everyone, so it tells the officer nothing about you.
If you have a study gap
Gaps are common and are not a problem in themselves. Explain what you did – work, family responsibilities, exam preparation – and show how it led to your course choice. Bring evidence such as an experience letter.
If you had a previous refusal
Declare any previous refusal honestly in your application – hiding one is far more serious than the refusal itself. In the interview, explain what the reason was and what has changed since, for example stronger funds or a better-matched course.
How long it takes and what happens next
Pre-CAS interviews usually take 10–20 minutes by video. The university may issue your CAS soon after, ask for more documents, or occasionally invite you to a second interview. Home Office interviews are less common and take place after you apply; the decision follows as normal.
